A Little Crappie Fishing

Thursday, May 15, 2014 , , 13 Comments

Snuck in some Crappie fishing before the latest cold front and caught quite a few. No real big slabs but fun nonetheless, also no single pattern stood out but all were caught either using Sarges Crappie Fly, Crappie Candy, or Clousers. Retrieve was very slow. Overall a beautiful and relaxing night.

Yep, set the Tenkara rod aside for the moment but will be bringing it back out next week for the Driftless.

Nice crappies (is the plural crappies or crappie?). Glad you were able to get out and about, brother!

Awesome jobs with the fly rod, I wish I could land some crappie with the fly. I know it was a blast. Can you post some of the flies you were using? Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing your fun and success. I am still looking for Crappie schooling up regularly out here. Weather has been a mess, but, been that way all over the country. Anxious to give you some feedback on your fly patterns.

Bill of course, I have two patterns in particular that work very well for me. I will out up one today called Sarges Crappie Fly. Look for it soon.

Mel, I can't wait to hear your reports on Crappie, and hope my developmental pattern proves useful for you!

I love when I hook up with a crappie on the fly rod. They're always a nice surprise when you can find them.

Crappie are a lot of fun for sure, especially the bigger ones.

Yesterday I tried out the jointed crappie fly you sent me. I was catching crappies regularly on the microjig/indicator system, and I figured it was a great opportunity to compare results to another pattern. I switched to your fly, and worked an entire stretch of shoreline. Bass loved it! Caught 3 on it, and then snagged something HUGE...catfish or grass carp I suspect. No crappies. I switched back to the microjig/indicator, and continued catching crappies. My opinion is it sinks too fast, so that it must be worked faster than crappies would prefer. May be a bit too long as well. I see you've done well on crappies with it, and it sounds like others in your area have also...so maybe its just my local fish that prefer a microjig? Or maybe it works better when the fish are suspended over deeper water? The fish I was catching were adjacent to the shallow top of a dropoff next to deeper water.

Dave, I have had mixed results with it as well. I may shorten it a bit but before I do I will give it a go this fall. Seems like the Crappie don't mind a slightly larger pattern then. Thanks for testing it and let me know if you have any more use/luck with it.
